| Is it possible to register joint ownership (multiple owners) or to add owners to the vehicle license? |
A vehicle may be registered in the names of multiple owners only at the time of purchase. Adding a name after this is considered a change in ownership, and requires entering an additional "previous owner" and payment of a fee, except for the following cases:
Adding the name of a spouse. Both husband and wife must appear together at the License Bureau with the original vehicle license and their identity cards
Removing the name of one of the registered owners requires payment of a fee only. The procedure is carried out at the License Bureau and all registered owners must be present |

| How can I Deposit ("Freeze") the License? |
If your vehicle is being kept off the road for an extended period of time due to travel, repair or any other reason, you may save the expense of the vehicle license and insurance fees by depositing your vehicle license. You must go to the License Bureau with your identity card and vehicle license, fill out a vehicle license deposit form and receive written confirmation of the deposit. The relative amount to be refunded from your license fee payment will be subtracted from the new license fee. To receive a refund of insurance fee payment, contact your insurance agent. To reinstate the license, go to the License Bureau with your identity card and the confirmation of deposit. You will then be required to pay the new license fee, less the amount due to you from the deposit period. |

| In what cases can the license fee be refunded? |
If your vehicle is stolen or declared a "total loss" (write-off) or its registration at the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety has been cancelled, you are legible for a refund of the annual license fee proportionate to the relevant period. If your request is deemed justified, the refund will be paid into your bank account within three months from the date you submitted your request.
A stolen vehicle: the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety sends a refund request form to the vehicle owner, in the event the request is deemed justified. The vehicle license fee refund request form should be sent to the License Bureau, indicating the car license number and the owner's bank account details and attaching a photocopy of a (blank) cheque showing the owner's details
"Total loss" (write-off): if a vehicle assessor has determined that your vehicle has been severely damaged and is non-repairable or that the cost of damage repair is 60% or over of the vehicle's value, the assessor must file a report to the License Bureau, attaching the vehicle license, within 15 days. The vehicle license will be cancelled and cannot be renewed. The vehicle license refund will be deposited direct into your bank account through the insurance company
Cancelling vehicle registration: registration may be cancelled by the vehicle owner only. If your vehicle is not roadworthy, has been removed for dismantling, etc., you must go to the License Bureau with your identity card, fill out a "request for cancellation of vehicle registration" form and hand the form in together with the vehicle license. At the same time you may fill out a license fee refund request form. The vehicle license will be cancelled and cannot be renewed
Please note: a vehicle license cannot be cancelled if the vehicle has any lien or attachment! |
