| Israel Encourages Jewish Physicians to Make Aliyah |
| Last Modified at:20-Aug-2008 |
In honor of Israel’s 60th anniversary and the shortage of physicians expected in Israel in the upcoming years, Israel has initiated a special program encouraging physicians from North America and the UK to immigrate to Israel.
The expected physician shortage is a result of population increase, the retirement of immigrant doctors (from the former USSR) and a trend of doctors in Israel leaving the medical profession. There is a particularly strong need for specialists in such areas as geriatrics, radiology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine, anesthesiology, neonatology, nephrology, neurology, pathology, and surgery.
The program is a joint program operated by the Nefesh B’Nefesh Aliyah organization, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption and the Legacy Foundation.
The Benefits Doctors who choose to participate in this program will benefit from significant financial grants (in addition to the regular benefits awarded by the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption), such as:
An initial $25,000 fellowship grant upon arrival in Israel
A monthly supplementary income of $1,000-$1,500 for the first two years
The benefits accorded to the doctors are estimated at $60,000 per doctor, a sum which should partially cover the differences between the salaries of doctors in Israel and their salaries in North American and the UK.
In addition to these grants and in order to simplify the absorption process, the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption will subsidize employment costs of physicians who will be absorbed into hospitals and research institutions. The ministry will also fund special preparatory courses for the licensing exams, so that the physicians will be able to obtain a license to practice medicine in Israel in a relatively easy manner.
Who is eligible to participate in the program? Physicians who wish to participate in the program must fulfill the following requirements:
Doctors under the age of 40 who have studied medicine in North America or the UK and have completed all requirements.
The doctors must commit to at least 9 months work in Israel every year.
In order to encourage Jewish physicians to participate in the program, the Nefesh B’Nefesh organization will hold a series of seminars for prospective applicants. The next seminar is due to take place in New York in March.
